Health Insurance: An ill reality - Detroit Spirituality Wellness
Tremendous deductibles, roaring copays, refused claims, uncovered ailments--these are the main problems people face when getting their health care policies. It does not matter which firm an individual is subscribed with, it is usually the case for most. What is worse is the heart breaking truth that many people have had to file bankruptcy due to uncovered claims and being locked into a major health care insurance corporation when sick. This limits individuals from taking advantage of any foundations and funding sources which are available to noninsured peole when stricken with a dilabitating illness.
For example cancer as well as cardiovascular disease, two major illnesses which are extremely common, many foundations are available to cover claims to the noninsured. Alas, many do not know of these resources. If individuals have a substandard policy, resources are not available to them. It's extremely difficult to explain to people how complex the health care insurance system actually is in America and the risks involved with attempting to get a policy.
God forbid, people should become extremly ill and must get claims insured by a policy. Please read this narrative:
Ms. W. is a fairly new customer of mine at the practice I work at as a psychotherapist. When she came is the very first time, she was homeless. Fortunately, she had a son, but he could not provide a place for her to stay, but he had a friend who managed to put her up. She had worked 30 years in the healthcare industry as a certified nursing assistant and got a livable wage that supported her and her son sufficiently.
Two years back, she developed heart disease and has not been able to work ever since. The problem was, Ms. W.'s policy did not cover even half of her claim expenses for her heart condition. She had to empty her life savings and when that was gone, the providers couldn't care for her any longer. Her health was eliminated from the hospital and with her son unable to keep her, she was forced to live in a shelter. She is a heart patient and had to leave the shelter early each morning ill, unable to walk, cold and famished.
This is one example of life in America when individuals become sick, unable to work, and have no family to depend on. Ms. W is one of several customer's who've been in similar scenarios, but her story is the most disturbing due to her dearth of support resources and her slipping through the cracks of being eligible for practically any capital resources due to being locked into a health care insurance company and having been a working, able bodied man for 30 years.
Ms. W's story is beginning to get happier. Her first session, I provided her with a list of resources for home. She now has a place to stay and her son is able to remain with her. He was laid off from his job. lost his spot
to live and hasn't received his joblessness yet. She came in for a session the other day, had no money for food, hadn't eaten that day whatsoever, and her appointment was at 2pm. She did get processed for her incapacity eventually, but her funding had run out for the month as a result of rent. Her landlord was reluctant to provide her a rest while she awaits her section 8 home spot. This leaves her paying market value when she's on handicap. So much for the Americans with disability act.
Ms. W's bridge card backing hadn't started yet was new for her. She was starving sitting in my office. Obviously, I gave her cash to eat and gave her a snack from the break room. The flooding of heartbroken emotion on her face when I offered her the money was one I'll never forget. And giving client's money is some thing I seldom do, but I believed I'd no choice--it was the right thing to do. How dare I not. Ms. W. is someone just like anyone else. A neighbor living next door or a coworker who comes in everyday. The reality is that we're all only one step away from being in Ms. W's situation. Just in America.
A primary recommendation for people who have health insurance will be to review the policy very carefully. We can't predict the future and noone knows what may occur. Find out more about the family history for sickness and ask the doctor to test for prevention functions. If someone is genetically predisposed to something, the health care coverage MUST pay for testing. Know the way to use the policy to full and how to get it. If it is substandard, dumpt it and explore other choices. Empowering ourselves with knowledge is one of the best stress reducers.
